The date is set! The 2012 Florida Messenger Association (FMA) Winter Meeting will take place in Orlando on January 26-27th at the Doubletree Hotel Universal.

Within the next couple of weeks, meeting representatives will forward a tentative agenda, meeting registration and hotel information. FMA will get the meeting rolling on Thursday evening with Casino night and Friday morning Rick McClelland, the former Chairman and CEO of Dynamex, will give our keynote address sponsored by Blue Streak Couriers.

This will be a meeting not to miss. McClelland has given numerous speeches at the Messenger Courier Association of America (MCAA) Annual Convention and New York State Association meetings. His information and message is worth the meeting investment alone.

McClelland is an industry veteran, having spent 40 years in the transportation and logistics business. He served as chairman and CEO of Dynamex from 1986 until 2008 and served as chairman and a director until 2011. As CEO, McClelland oversaw the completion of more than 60 acquisitions and directed a network of operating locations throughout Canada and the United States that served approximately 20,000 clients and generated annualized sales in excess of $450 million.

He led a group of direct reports responsible for all aspects of the business including sales, operations, finance, accounting, human resources, labor relations and the company's acquisition program. In total, the team at Dynamex consisted of over 6,200 drivers and inside staff. Currently, McClelland is an adviser and consultant in the delivery industry.

Last year, 106 individuals attended the FAM meeting and the association expects to surpass that total easily in 2011. In addition to the Florida companies attend, FMA is inviting companies throughout the U.S. and Canada. Last year, many courier companies visited from the "Great White North" and more are expected this year.

Supply chain management programs ranked in industry study

The Whitman School of Management’s supply chain management programs were ranked in a recent Gartner study on how leading universities are educating supply chain management professionals to contend with a rapidly changing field. Whitman’s graduate program was ranked sixth in the nation among its peers, the highest ranking Whitman has received to date for any of its supply chain programs. The undergraduate program was ranked 16th.

Because supply chain managers often hold the key to corporate profitability, economists and employers in today’s global market agree that the field of supply chain management stands apart for its strong growth potential. Program rankings are critical in a dynamic specialty industry that is redefining itself and transitioning to highly integrated, interdependent networks.

“The Whitman School has been a leader in supply chain management education and research since our founding. We are home to the nation’s first supply chain program, which continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of the industry,” says Whitman School Dean Melvin T. Stith. “Gartner’s recognition of our supply chain programs is a reflection of the high-quality nature of our curriculum, research and faculty.”

Gartner, a technology research firm, asked more than 400 supply chain practitioners and academics to rate supply chain education programs across the country. Ratings were based on industry value (40 percent), program size (20 percent) and scope (40 percent). Respondents assessed how well programs meet the changing needs of supply chain professionals and the efficiency in which research and innovations in the field reach the student population. To calculate rankings, Gartner also factored in school-provided information regarding enrollment, programs and faculty size.

DHL Unveils 'Green' Initiative

DHL (Plantation, Fla.) advanced several sustainability initiatives this month as part of its ongoing commitment to environmental protection. These environmentally-conscious practices minimize the impact of DHL’s shipping network on the environment through more efficient transport, innovative technologies and services that reduce and offset carbon emissions. They are introduced as DHL recognizes the U.S. Department of Energy initiative that promotes conservation and a clean energy economy during National Energy Awareness Month.

On Sept. 30, DHL completed its deployment of a fully green fleet of pickup and delivery vehicles in Manhattan. This fleet includes 30 battery-powered electric vans and 50 hybrid trucks and enables DHL to serve customers via sustainable solutions and improved resource efficiency by cutting down fossil fuel use, and in combination, reducing CO2 emissions by more than 50 percent each year in comparison to conventional vehicles. The battery-powered electric vehicles are charged with green electricity provided by ConEdison Solutions and produced from renewable energy sources such as wind. DHL has been integrating the new vehicles into its fleet while phasing out gas-powered models.

At the same time, a new environmentally-friendly Paperless Clearance feature will enable DHL customers to electronically transmit documents to Customs – eliminating the need to print and manually attach them to shipments. Available on October 31 as part of a new DHL-USA.com website, the new feature will save customers shipment preparation time. By eliminating having to attach hard copy export documents like Certificates of Origin, Commercial and Pro Forma Invoices, DHL customers will collectively save millions of sheets of paper each year; reduce waste; and boost preservation of natural resources including water, trees and energy.

A DHL GOGREEN Carbon Neutral service, available to Express import and export customers in 41 countries, enables customers to offset their estimated CO2 emissions for a service charge that is used by DHL to invest in high quality, gold standard and official Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) environmental protection projects. Standard Chartered Bank is the first bank to adopt DHL GOGREEN Carbon Neutral service globally, signing a worldwide contract to make 95 percent of the bank’s international courier services carbon neutral.

“Energy efficiency is the largest ecological challenge faced by transportation companies such as ours,” said Ian Clough, CEO of DHL Express U.S. “We are constantly looking at innovative ways to reduce our carbon footprint and create sustainable solutions for our customers.”

Relay Express Opens New Office in Buffalo

U.S. Clean Diesel Auto Sales Up 37 Percent

The 20.4 percent increase in clean diesel automobile sales in August continued the strong growth of diesel car sales in the United States during 2011, according to Allen Schaeffer, executive director of the Diesel Technology Forum.

For the year, domestic diesel auto sales have increased by an impressive 37 percent over 2010 compared to the overall auto market’s 10.4 percent increase.

The August 2011 clean diesel auto sales statistics compiled by www.hybridcars.com and market analyst Baum and Associates show that diesel cars sales increased by 20.4 percent over August 2010. As a comparison, the overall U.S. auto market was up 7.5 percent in August.

"The steady increase in clean diesel auto sales is a reflection of the U.S. public’s shift toward clean and more fuel efficient vehicles,” Schaeffer said. “With the increased fuel prices over the past year and the government’s new fuel efficiency standards, American drivers are seeing that clean diesel cars are the best option for reliable green transportation.

For the past 13 months, clean diesel auto sales have increased each month over the previous year according to www.hybridcars.com Market Dashboard statistics. (Each month’s sales statistics are measured against the same month in the previous year. Hybrid sales since April 2011 have decreased primarily due to the major production and distribution problems caused by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami disasters in Japan.)

By 2015, Baum and Associates expects diesel car sales to grow to 6.0 to 6.5 percent of the entire U.S. market, compared to just over 3.0 percent today. The research firm J.D. Power & Associates sees the U.S. diesel market share growing steadily to 7.4 percent by 2017.

Schaeffer said fuel-efficient clean diesel technology is expected to play an expanded role in meeting the 54.5 mpg fuel economy standards by 2025, as mandated by the new greenhouse gas and fuel efficiency regulations announced by EPA this summer.

“While almost 50 percent of all cars in Europe are diesel-powered, slightly more than three percent of cars and light trucks in the U.S. are diesels,” Schaeffer said. “But the positive monthly diesel sales increases in the U.S. and the new higher federal fuel efficiency requirements are both positives signs for the future growth of clean diesel sales.

DHL Increasing Advertising Efforts

DHL Express (Plantation, Fla.) has announced the launch of its most ambitious advertising campaign in 42 markets around the world, demonstrating its capability to meet the express shipping needs of global industries. New Cold-Chain Solution Supports Ambient Temperature Control for Critical Shipments

American Airlines Cargo (Fort Worth, Texas) announced the expansion of its cold-chain service, ExpediteTCSM, to include a new solution for the requirements of cold packaging during transit.

The solution, called ExpediteTC Passive, supports ambient temperature control using state-of-the-art cool rooms, expedited handling processes and high-visibility monitoring to ensure cargo is handled within desired temperature ranges. This offering augments American’s current service, ExpediteTC Active, which utilizes dry ice and battery-powered containers to actively regulate temperature levels, regardless of ambient conditions.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Names Maritime Industry Advisory Panel

The United States Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood has announced the appointment of 29 members to the new Marine Transportation System National Advisory Council (MTSNAC), established to advise the department on matters relating to marine transportation.

“Shifting some of our freight from the highways to open inland waterways is a fuel-efficient, cost-effective way to move goods and reduce roadway congestion,” said Secretary LaHood. “The recommendations developed by the Marine Transportation System National Advisory Council will help us increase transportation efficiency, improve the environment and grow the economy.”

The Department will task the MTSNAC with developing recommendations on establishing new marine highway services and port infrastructure development, among other issues.

“The experience brought to bear by this diverse panel is impressive,” said Maritime Administrator David Matsuda. “These maritime experts have a lot to contribute. I look forward to their advice as we tackle the industry's most pressing challenges."

In creating the MTSNAC, the department sought members with exemplary experience in serving on other government and industry maritime advisory panels. Members were nominated through a full and open process published in the Federal Register.

TMSi Logistics Acquires Griffin Global Logistics

Ride to Recovery Effort

A prominent industry figurehead is soliciting help from his fellow expedited delivery professionals for a good cause. Bruce Ross of Express Air is participating in a 530 mile bicycle ride in September to remember the fallen police, fire, civilian and military personnel that died in the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

All of the proceeds for the ride will benefit the "Ride 2 Recovery" program that helps wounded warriors progress through physical therapy with bike rides. The full release is listed below:

I am writing directly to my annual Air Cargo Conference brethren to help with this worthy cause in remembrance and in support. Yes, it is Bruce again with one of his crazy rides for charity. But I think this is one of the most important ever.

This September 11, the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attack, I have the honor of participating in a 530 mile bicycle ride starting at Ground Zero, then to the Flight 93 Memorial in Shanksville, PA, and continuing to the Pentagon Memorial in Washington, D.C. This ride is in remembrance of our fallen police, fire, civilian and military personnel who died as a result of this attack on America.

All proceeds from this ride are going to help our wounded warriors with their recovery through physical therapy by introducing bike riding. Due to amputations and disfigurement, many of these heroes could not ride if it wasn’t for the “Ride 2 Recovery.” Bikes are custom made to accommodate their injuries giving them freedom and purpose. They have so many success stories of giving our soldiers a second chance.

Report: Logistics Market Snapshot Tracks Industry Growth

The Georgia Center of Innovation for Logistics (Savannah, Ga.) released an industry snapshot in July documenting progress for the trucking, rail, air freight, ocean freight and warehouse and distribution sectors of the logistics industry.

Based on the report’s findings, the trucking market appears strong. After declining for the previous two months, over-the-road trucked shipments rose 1 percent in June. Surface transport-related trade between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners increased 12.1 percent in April when compared to the previous year, which marks the 17th consecutive month of increases. Heavy-duty truck sales increased 68.3 percent in May, which was the fastest growth rate in 17 months. The trucking industry added 4,400 new jobs in June, with a workforce increase of 3.3 percent. Economists expect orders for heavy-duty Class 8 trucks to total 21,200 units, an 11 percent decrease from the previous month, but a 35.3 percent increase from the previous year.

The report shows an 11.6 percent increase in United States Freight Rail Traffic from June 2009. Greenbrier Companies (Lake Oswego, Ore.) reported revenue increases of 153 percent in fiscal year 3Q, but posted a net loss of $3.3 million after paying a $10 million debt. Railroad employment increased by 745 employees from April to May.

The report notes that global air freight fell 4.3 percent in May when compared to the previous year, but rose 1.2 percent from April. The International Air Transport Association (Montreal, Quebec) expects 2011 airline net profits of $4 billion, which is 78 percent lower than last year.

The report states that the U.S. imported more than $67 billion of cargo via ocean in May, an increase of 7 percent from the previous month, and exported $48 billion, a 27 percent increase from 2010. The Port of Brunswick posted its highest monthly volume ever in May. Year-to-date steel imports increased 20.6 percent, reflecting a steady improvement in the market with strong demand and pricing. Drewry Maritime Research (London) predicts east-west ocean freight rates will drop 20.8 percent in 2011.

According to the report, the U.S. average industrial vacancy rate was 9.3 percent in the warehousing and distribution sector. Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas (Chicago) is investing $10 million to move its American headquarters from Chicago to Norcross, Ga. The new headquarters will include a warehouse. Kuehne + Nagel (Schindellegi, Switzerland) handled nearly 10 percent of the world’s air and sea freight business. The top 10 freight forwarders’ business accounted for 44 percent of the market.

Report: Companies Place Demand Planning/Forecasting as a Supply Chain Function

Lifework Search (Westport, Mass.) associates found that more than half of all companies believe that the planning/forecasting function should sit under supply chain, according to a recent study.

Lifework Search associates surveyed the company’s network to determine where the demand planning/forecasting function should sit within an organization. Associates discovered that more than half of companies placed the function under supply chain. Twenty percent of the remaining respondents categorized the function under sales, followed by 9 percent with finance and 5 percent with marketing. Fourteen percent of respondents stated “other.”

“This has long been a controversial topic in the forecasting world,” Lifework Search Managing Director Jason Breault said. “We speak with dozens of demand planning professionals daily, and many are still unclear as to where demand planning should sit. Even while presenting at a recent Institute of Business Forecasting conference, when the question was asked, there didn’t seem to be a clear consensus.”

The mobile site features Mitsubishi Forklift Trucks product information, such as forklift specifications and brochure downloads, a local dealer search function and access to finance information and promotions. The site’s Cost Control Basics section provides tips for minimizing costs and maximizing the efficiency of their forklifts.

DHL Express to Deliver Pizzas to Servicemen in Afghanistan

Independence Day is all about patriotism, and no one is more patriotic than the men and women serving overseas for our country. As an effort to honor these men and women, DHL Express (Plantation, Fla.), Pizzas 4 Patriots (Cedar Knolls, N.J.) and UNO’s (Boston) teamed up to deliver thousands of pizzas to United States and Canadian soldiers for the upcoming U.S. and Canadian Independence Days.

Pizzas 4 Patriots organizers plan to load 6,000 deep-dish pizzas from UNO’s into a DHL cargo jet about a week before the holidays, which will then arrive at military bases in Afghanistan.

“We are happy to partner, once again, with Pizzas 4 Patriots and DHL in sending our troops a taste of home this Fourth of July,” Vietnam Veteran and UNO’s CEO Frank Guidara said. “Our troops have told us how much enjoyment it brings to receive a taste of home, and that is what this program is all about. Logistics Company Receives Security Accreditation

DHL Express attained full Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA) certification for each of its 20 North American facilities.

TAPA is an industry security accreditation that is given to facilities in order to recognize high security standards. To receive TAPA certification, facilities must undergo a two-day process during which auditors evaluate aspects of its security including employee training, alarm systems, investigations and more.

DHL Express coordinators say that the certification will help to further develop the security of its global shipping network.

“Knowing that every one of our key locations has met the rigorous requirements for TAPA certification assures our customers that DHL Express maintains the highest levels of security within the supply chain,” DHL Express head of Global Customs and senior vice president Adrian Whelan said. “We are continually looking for ways to provide the very highest levels of security for our customers.”

The Evolving Industry

After last night's networking party by the pool, MCAA attendees returned for more valuable insight into the courier industry today with the first presentation, "The Evolving Landscape of the Same-Day Industry."

The panel consisted of three leaders in the shipping industry, Benjamin Gordon (BG Strategic Advisors), Andy Ahern (Ahern and Associates and Tom Washbush (Benesch Attorneys at Law.

The three discussed the outlook on the courier and transportation industry as a whole. Gordon noted how transportation company stock has increased more than 20 percent in the last year. As the economy continues to rebound, albeit slowly, Gordon said small courier operations are set to benefit from the boost.

Moderator Rob Slack focused the second part of the session around selling a courier business. While there are many factors to consider when selling a business, Washbush explained that owners must be ready to let go of the operation before the selling process can even begin.

Becoming a High Performance Individual

With a legacy of success and winning, Vince Lombardi, Jr., took the stage this morning at the MCAA convention to share his ideas of becoming ... and keeping ... a high performance individual.

Lombardi, Jr., shared several stories about his father, Vince Lombardi, Sr., who coached the Green Bay Packers to several championships in the 1960s, including the first Super Bowl.

The main topic of the presentation included what people do when they're at their best. It was a motivational 1-hour session and left many courier and messenger professional inspired once they left the conference room.

Mr. MCAA Names to the MCAA Hall of Fame

It's only fitting that Rob Slack was named to the Messenger Couriers Association of America's Hall of Fame during the association's annual business meeting this morning. With a nickname such as "Mr. MCAA" and more than 20 years of service to the expedited delivery association, Slack was a perfect choice for the honor.

Slack follows Bill Goodman as the latest courier professional to receive the honor. Slack received a plaque from Gil Carpel of Washington Express during the presentation. Slack noted how honored he was for the selection and credited his peers during his tenure with the MCAA.

"This really is a great association that can enhance the way couriers do business in this country," Slack said. "I never though of this as a job. Instead, it was something that had to be done."

With only a month to go, registration has been brisk for this year’s Messenger Courier Association of America (MCAA) Annual meeting, May 11-14 at the Red Rock Casino and Resort in Las Vegas. Breakaway Couriers Breaks Out in 'Triple Rush'

Earlier this week, we told you about a new television reality show that is debuting later this month on the Travel Channel. Called "Triple Rush," the show tells the chaotic tale of bike messengers on the busy streets of New York.

Well, one of our readers sent in a release about their company participating in the filming of the show. Breakaway Courier Systems (New York) has a more than a few employees that will have prominent roles in production.

With the April 14 premier of the Travel Channel’s “Triple Rush,” the public will get a glimpse into the sometimes chaotic, often misunderstood world of New York City bicycle messengers.

Those cast members representing Breakaway Courier, one of the featured companies, are among the most intriguing. Leading the pack is Kotch, a.k.a. Robert Kotch, owner of Breakaway Courier. Kotch knows the business from the ground up. He’s not only Breakaway’s founder, but also a bike commuter, sometime racer and former bicycle courier himself. The eccentric but benevolent leader is devoted to the sport of cycling (he still travels nearly 50 miles a day between his home in New Jersey and Breakaway’s NY office).

He even still makes the occasional delivery on the streets of New York, just to keep his hand in and to show the new kids how it’s done. Kotch’s second-in-command, Breakaway General Manager Andy Young, is referred to in his Travel Channel bio as “the hammer,” but he’s a velvet hammer, guiding and protecting his troops with a firm hand and gentle demeanor that belies his battle-hardened 26 years in the business.

Dueling dispatchers Andrew Borromey and “Wild” Bill Dappio sit side-by-side in the Breakaway office amid a cloud of constant chatter. Juggling phones and radios that connect them to their soldiers on the street, they seem to speak in a language known only to them, using shorthand and codes to get everyone where they need to be as quickly as possible. While Bill is a legend in the business, know for his savant-like ability to visualize patterns of runs on the screen, Andrew is a relative rookie, learning from the best amid affectionate derision from his co-workers aimed at his distinctive wardrobe.

Out on the streets, Breakaway is represented by Jennessa, now a midwife-to-be and Scott, an architect by trade who took to the streets when the economy took a downturn and has now returned to his family in Oregon. Breakaway Courier Systems is a full service logistical company with offices in New York City and Boston. They specialize in same day deliveries with bicycles and vehicles that range from hatchbacks to 26-foot lift-gate trucks.

Former CM Success Story Grows Again

In April, Urgent Couriers (Auckland, New Zealand) bought out rival freight business Inter City Urgent to enable its move from small cars into trucking.

Urgent, a former Courier Magazine Success Story (July-August 2010), owns nearly a quarter of Auckland's fast delivery market and company representative expect the purchase to increase business by 40 percent over the next year.

Founder Steve Bonnici expects some growing pains as Urgent develops its trucking sector and goes from 17 to 21 full-time employees and from 65 to 90 contractors.
"We are coming to grips with the fact that trucks don't move around anywhere near as quickly. The size of the vehicles dictates where you can send them,” Bonnici told reporters. “They are not as nimble as a courier vehicle.”

Bonnici explained how standard business—including document delivery—has declined with the implementation of better email technology.

"We've moved significantly into parcels and this is just another step, providing cross-town pallets at a reasonably quick pace,” he said.

Known as New Zealand’s only carbon-neutral courier company, Urgent is still committed to its “green” plan even after taking on a fleet of vans and trucks.
"We are coming to grips with what trucks will work for us long term. Ultimately we will maintain our carbon neutral status, it just will mean that our carbon footprint will be a bit larger," Bonnici said.

DELPHI INTRODUCES NEW INTEGRATED SEAT-BASED HVAC SYSTEM

Innovative System Increases Comfort, Decreases Complexity For Off-Road And Commercial Vehicles

LAS VEGAS – Delphi Automotive’s new seat-based heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system simplifies the cab design process and minimizes equipment assembly while efficiently keeping passengers comfortable.

The system is part of the E3 HVAC Seat, which combines Delphi’s Diavia HVAC application capability with the COBO group’s steering column, seat, lighting, electric and electronic devices. The E3 HVAC Seat will debut this week at COBO’s booth (No. S-16353 in the South Hall, 2nd Level) at the CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2011 exposition being held at the Las Vegas Convention Center March 22-26.

“Combining Delphi’s new HVAC system with the COBO seat provides equipment manufacturers the opportunity to keep operators comfortable while simplifying the overall cabin design and installation process,” said Roberto Grotti, managing director, Delphi Diavia.

Designed for medium-size vehicle or equipment cabins or small rooms, the E3 HVAC has a cooling capacity of 6.2 kW and a heating capacity of 5.8 kW. It can provide climate control for the cab only or for the cab and seat cushion by channeling air flow from the vents. By adjusting the vents, the operator can select the most comfortable cab temperature and keep the seat dry.

Air is cooled through an evaporator provided with an expansion valve and using the cooling gas from the AC system. Air is warmed using a heater containing the fluid coming from the endothermic motor. The air is circulated using an electric fan and the air flow is managed by an electronic voltage regulator PWM (pulse width modulator) allowing a linear voltage adjustment at the ends of the fan.

Since the seat and HVAC unit are fully integrated, plug and play installation is simple and design and assembly time are reduced. Additionally, all climate control functions are incorporated into the new electronic control board with CAN BUS interface, which has been specifically designed for industrial vehicle cabins. This new control unit -- built in conformity with ISO 7637 and 2004/104/CE rules --is located inside the seat arm.

Nothing Stops the Commitment of a Courier Company

Straight out of the Runners Inc., (Gaithersburg, Md.) spring newsletter, a courier tells his story about how it takes a lot more than natural elements to slow down. Read all about it in the release below:

Snow, sleet, rain, hail or deer can't stop our drivers when they're providing pick-up and delivery services. This past December, Alfred Koroma, one of our drivers was en-route with a DIRECT RUSH DELIVERY (pick-up and deliver ASAP, non-stop, within 60-90 minutes).

Without any warning, a deer jumped on his car, broke the front windshield and smashed the roof in. A shaken Alfred immediately alerted Runners' dispatcher about the accident since he was unable to continue with the delivery. When we asked Alfred if he could tell us what it felt like when the deer hit his car he said, "I didn't know what hit me since I never saw the deer until it landed on my car. I was very upset but able to keep control of my car and get it to the curb before stopping. I was very lucky to escape unharmed." Another driver was quickly dispatched to pick up the package and the interrupted delivery was made only a few minutes later than promised

Southwest Airlines Cargo (Dallas) has announced a new stop for freight and cargo in their network. Newark, N.J., will be the new site for Southwest service and it will begin March 27. The full press release is below:

Well, Courier Magazine is back in Kansas City (we were greeted by snow) and now we are full of ideas and topics to fill the magazine with covering the air cargo industry. Air Cargo 2011 turned out to be a great event for the AEMCA, AfA and XLA. Members of each association were privy to an array of educational sessions.

Those sessions are what I found to be the best benefit for the event. Sure, there are numerous networking opportunities and a giant trade show, but the seminars are really the hub of the entire event.

Whether it be legal issues or TSA compliance, import/export concerns or personnel questions, each session was designed for attendees to get the most out of each seminar. Some of the brightest minds in the business gathered in San Diego for Air Cargo 2011 and attendees came out on top with the information that was distributed.

Going forward, every convention (beyond Air Cargo) offers a real value to attendees and its where great ideas are exchanged. I urge all of you to go out and see for yourself how improve business and expand bottom lines through conventions and trade shows.

Another Benefit for Air Cargo Attendees

The town hall meeting gave Air Cargo 2011 attendees to sound off on some of their own, personal concerns in the world of expedited delivery. More than a few times, audience members participated in an extensive conversation with other professionals in the same industry.

The topics included TSA regulations, IC issues, supply chain adjustments and litigation updates. The town hall session proved to be another top benefit to attending the Air Cargo convention.

As an outsider with the press, I thought it was great to see certain companies learn from another about a specific rule or regulation. This was the type of networking that can advance a company beyond a simple presentation.

With the legal session coming up later this afternoon, Air Cargo attendees are sure to have their eyes opened about what are the dos and don'ts concerning freight forwarding and international delivery.

Making Your Business Safe

Good morning!

The second day of Air Cargo 2011 started with a panel of industry experts about keeping your expedited delivery business safe. There are many new laws and court proceedings that have affected the industry over the past several years (not to mention months) that many couriers, messengers and expedited delivery specialists have become confused about how to treat their business.

The panel, headed by Washington D.C., attorney Hank Seaton, talked about some of the steps that companies can take to safeguard businesses through litigation, insurance and independent contractor management.

The team also discussed cases that are ongoing in Massachusetts and along the east coast that could affect the IC landscape for years to come.

Talking About Asia

Just across the Pacific Ocean from the Hilton Bayfront in the middle of downtown San Diego is a market that has yet to be fully tapped. The countries of Asia is a beacon of hope for more than a few air cargo and freight professionals in the United States that have seen bottom lines diminish over the last few years.

A panel of air cargo and trade specialists gathered this afternoon to give their opinions on what the Asia market truly offers. Air Cargo 2011 organizers promoted the theme of the event as "Tapping Into Asia" and the message of the panel couldn't have been more appropriate for the event.

The panel led a in-depth discussion about the economic possibilities of Asia and the different steps needed to begin business discussions.

XLA Award Winners

Southwest Airlines Cargo returned to the podium as Airline of the Year during the Express Delivery and Logistics Association membership meeting this morning at Air Cargo 2011.

Southwest also took home the award for excellence in web and technology. American Airlines Cargo finished with the most improved airline award while United Airlines Cargo won international airline of the year.

The XLA meeting also featured a presentation by Mark Thorpe, air service marketing manager for Los Angeles World Airports. Thorpe delivered his presentation on air cargo capabilities through Los Angeles International Airport.

He said air cargo is a driving force for job creation and XLA Executive Director Jim Conway couldn't agree more.

"That is something we need to underline for legislative and other governing bodies." Conway stated at the end of the meeting.

Cooperating Business

In the first presentation of the day, Motivational Speaker Mimi Donaldson had some interesting ways of connecting business communication with the National Football League. The unconventional keynote address spoke to many different many different ideas floating around in the American workplace, but it was her analysis of competing mindsets that got the biggest response from the audience.

Donaldson's approach to casual versus formal thinkers sparked some reflection in the Air Cargo 2011 crowd. She also noted how these thinkers have a different way of doing business in the real world.

In order to cooperate with one another, Donaldson explained several techniques to capture the attention of each group. She noted the process can be trying for some, but it can lead to the creation of a successful workplace.

Indianapolis Colts Quarterback Peyton Manning, to whom Donaldson dedicated her latest book, was a prominent subject during the presentation. She spoke about his efficiency in developing a game plan and getting his teammates to buy into the same goal.

The first full day of Air Cargo 2011 is upon us, and after the networking reception last night, I can say that this edition of the convention is one of the largest in years. The exhibit hall is packed with company booths from all sectors of the courier, messenger and air cargo industries. It was great to put a few faces with names for a number of Courier Magazine readers and advertisers.

After a night of visiting with old friends and making new ones during the first day of Air Cargo, the convention is about to take flight this morning with keynote speaker Mimi Donaldson.

The AEMCA has packed a full day of seminars and networking opportunities for attendees at this year's event in San Diego. The annual XLA membership meeting is also on tap for today and we'll have a recap up later this afternoon.

Winners Featured at MCAA’s Annual Meeting in May

Winners from all walks of life will be featured at this year’s MCAA Annual meeting May 11-14. The program, called “Growing Your Business in an Unpredictable World,” will include a keynote address by Vince Lombardi, Jr., and will follow with practical advice from those who have found success in the world of expedited delivery.

Lombardi’s keynote address on Thursday, May 12 will be “What High Performance People Know”. In it he will give conference participants insight, inspiration and knowledge. As the son of the late Vincent T. Lombardi, one of the greatest football coaches in the history of the sport, Lombardi spent his early years in an atmosphere full of personal power and achievement. Add to that his personal journal into the law, government and back into sports and he has the capacity to share the secrets that high performing people know. Participants will gain inspiration from Lombardi’s view of how high performance people see themselves and the world around them. Participants will learn from how they can orchestrate their own high performance for themselves and those around them.

Continuing Thursday’s theme of high performance will be a panel called “Walk This Way...How I Paved My Own Road to Success." It will feature speakers on the many roads to success in the expedited delivery industry. Panelists will be business people who have each taken a different path that make their companies go from good to great. Participants will gain the knowledge they will need to pave their own road to success.

Jacobson Companies Hires Duerschmidt as President of Key Account Sales

Transportation Labor Pledges Support for President’s Goal to Rebuild America

Edward Wytkind, President of the Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO (TTD), made the following statement following President Obama’s State of the Union speech from last evening:

“In his State of the Union address, President Obama upped the ante in the debate about investing in our crumbling transportation system and infrastructure. Not since President Eisenhower committed to building a national interstate highway system has a President told the nation–as President Obama declared last night–that rebuilding America lies at the core of "winning the future."

“President Obama is in complete agreement with transportation labor in saying that America can no longer afford to fall behind China – with its ‘faster trains and newer airports’ – and the rest of the world in investing in the movement of people, goods and information. He said our infrastructure used to ‘be the best – but our lead has slipped.’ And he talked about the need to ‘redouble’ our efforts to use strategically significant investments to create good jobs. Needless to say, we agree.

“Last night’s speech wasn’t just another State of the Union address – it was a President committing to thinking big about America’s future and making our 21st Century transportation system and infrastructure the envy of the world again. The truth is that we will fail to meet the nation’s mounting transportation needs in this new decade by cutting the transportation budget to 2008 or lower levels, as some in Congress have proposed.”

“As Congress considers several long-overdue, multi-year transportation investment bills, we pledge our support to make the President’s vision to rebuild, expand and modernize our entire transportation system a reality.”

The New World Alliance set to reduce ocean capacity

The New World Alliance (Rotterdam) said today it will temporarily reduce capacity on selected Trans-Pacific Trade services to coincide with Lunar New Year factory shutdowns in Asia. The three container shipping lines in the alliance - APL, Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) said the winter deployment program is expected to last six weeks; more if necessary.

"We'll review demand and capacity again well in advance of the peak shipping season," APL President Eng Aik Meng said. "As conditions warrant, we'll re-introduce capacity."

Winter deployment programs are routine for The New World Alliance carriers and the Trans-Pacific Trade in general, where Asian exports slow significantly during the Lunar New Year holiday break. Factory closures sharply curb the production of finished goods which are a staple of the trade. Alliance members said Lunar New Year factory closures this year are expected to be longer than usual, perhaps up to three or four weeks.

Alliance carriers said they will reduce capacity during the period by selectively omitting sailings on the SAX, PSW, PCX and PCE services. They said other services may be adjusted to ensure complete port coverage and that customers will be notified ahead of deployment changes.
